Final Quiz Questions:
Q: When locating information on the "Open Web" what is this term?
A: The “open web” consists of top level search engine (.com, .edu, .gov, .net) sites to find information needed for research. Google is one of the top search engines, but the open web is not limited to Google. Any search engine that is not proprietary, meaning someone has paid money to only access the data, is considered the open web. It is a way for websites and search engines to publish search results in a standard and accessible format. To utilize the “open web search engines” is to have unlimited access to what is considered “free web search” and can be accessed by any computer.
Q: What is a Blog?
A: A blog or (web log) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. A blog allows users to reflect, share opinions, and discuss various topics in the form of an online journal while readers may comment on posts. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Blogs seem to be the new wave of the future, as everyone has an opinion and freedom of speech act allows us to freely speak on the World Wide Web.
Q: What is a deep web search?
A: Access to the “deep web” is limited to users with proprietary access meaning: private data bases, college or university data bases and proprietary data bases that can be briefly accessed on the open web. Deep web records are based on a scholar backing published in accredited forum which entails a cost; therefore access is at a cost. The hosting person pays access to the information and in return the users must be allowed access and this access is not open to the public.
Q: Describe how a Database works.
A: Databases vary from field to field, but the basics remain the same. To access a data base the information searched is broken down into specific search criteria’s with formulas. Most databases are proprietary and one would need granted access to utilize them, however card catalogs’ at a public library are free to access and each field of the database has unique target words for searching out the information one would seek for research.
Q: Describe how subject fields work.
A: Subject fields work in a manner of breaking down the search words in targeted search points. With adequate information a subject field can bring your research search engine to another level of answers. A proper search word in a subject field brings information from many different sites so you can choose accordingly your path of research.
Q: What is Authoritative Information and list the 6 sources.
A: Authoritative information stems from research information that is written by people with credible knowledge. Six main sources of authoritative information are: Academic encyclopedias (open web search), academic journals (proprietary search), Books and e-books (open web search), popular magazines (open web search), Web sites (open web search) and personal interviews.
Q: What is the evaluating information sources system?
The source evaluating information system is a general rule towards evaluating credible sources for research. The A.S.P.E.C.T. system is a proven system to evaluate the following:
A.uthority: To authenticate the source, is there an author with credentials and is there expertise in the credentials.
S. ource: Is the information presented as a fact, if so does the author provide documentation, if so then are the documented sources included.
P. urpose: Was the source written to inform and educate, does the source have a specific opinion? Is the content aimed at a general audience, or written for readers with expertise in the subject?
E. venness: Does the author recognize other points of view, is the information presented objective and or is the information biased?
C. overage: Is the information new, does it support what you have found in other sources? Is the source comprehensive or inclusive enough for your needs?
T. imeliness: When was the source published and is the date appropriate for your topic?
Q: What is a Web Browser?
A: A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content.
Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private networks or files in file systems. Some browsers can be also used to save information resources to file systems.
Q: What is a credible source?
A: A credible source adds validity and depth to the research, it also opens up a different point of view and you might not be thinking about when doing research. To evaluate a source to determine its creditability is to look for key components such as: does the author have credentials, is the source current and up to date, and are there timelines that match what your research has to offer.
Q: What is an FTP and explain how it works.
A: The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to transfer files between two computers over a network and Internet. File transfers over the Internet use special techniques, of which one of the oldest and most widely-used is FTP. FTP, short for "File Transfer Protocol," can transfer files between any computers that have an Internet connection, and also works between computers using totally different operating systems. Transferring files from a client computer to a server computer is called "uploading" and transferring from a server to a client is "downloading".

Research Journal Part 5
http://twoplayfulotters.com/students/ljackson.html
I found this activity to be awsome!!! I struggled with it which is why it was late, I completely understand the concepts of using a server to upload information written in a certain language so that browsers can read it. I would have liked a little more information about writing the actual language in text only format that was tricky but over all this lesson opened my eyes to how web pages work. As well as how data has to be stored on a server (remote hard drive)to be accessed on the web. If there wern't virtual servers, we would have very limited information to access because most people don't want to host their entire hard drive's information on line just to view one piece of information that someone hosted. I feel this level of information we learned was a vital piece to this class, it puts the web in a bigger perspective a more down to my computer perspective. The instructions were clear and step by step which made it very easy to understand on pretty much any level of comprehension and or learning curve. I now know how to post my thoughts and experiences on the web! I am very excited to have learned this information..

The WWW Virtual Library Unit 7
I chose the WWW Virtual Library
Fist page has alot of information giving 15 basic catagories to choose from, I choose Art. I started playing with the search function to see how it worked, search statements: Art and Media showed me websites relating to art as well as media.
"Art Media" in quotes gave me all sites related to Art Media in quotes bringing me to websites dealing in Art Media instead of Art and Media.
I searched for Baroque Art in quotes came with an entire different set of searches then I searched for Baroque and Art came up with another completely different scope of results.
This search engine regarding Art took me to sites that actually showed pictures of art, anything and everything to do with Art, artwork, painting. I found that alot of the links are not in english when regarding Art, as well as alot of the links don't really take you anywhere most didnt work. But the ones that did, worked well I could use this search engine to really get to the point of my art and media search.
There is an advanced search engine on this site, used the same as any other search engine we have used in this class, but it has a URL match section which I found useful.

PC World, Jul2009, Vol. 27 Issue 7, p13-13, 1/2p, 1 Color Photograph; (AN 41541399)

I choose this scholarly article due to I felt I could not go wrong with an International Review of Law. I read the title and felt that it would take me towards the future of Internet copyright which is half of my research paper.
Newspaper Article:
Copyright Lawsuit Names Leading Technology Firms.
JOHN MARKOFF; MIGUEL HELFT. New York Times, 1/3/2007, p3, 0p; (AN 28165229)
I used the search function of "newspaper" on the EBSCO Database search page, I found that this function saved time of looking at pages and pages of unrelated text to look for a newspaper article. I felt any article that can make it on a page of the New York Times would deem a credable source.
I had to change my search statement right from the beginning of this assignment due to no search results in the EBSCO database. I put the word "future" in quotes trying to capture that particular word along with Internet Copyright AND "future" came back with 114 hits. I utilized the newspaper search only function and found that helped alot with showing me newspaper only articles. I found this assignment very useful when searching peridocials.

Data Base and Books Sumerize
I found unit VERY helpful in looking for better sources on the Internet vs. just an article. Books, Books, Books, WOW I had no idea that there were so many scanned books at one's finger tips. The search criteria's seemed the same and can easily be flipped between the different sites. They compare with one another in the element that they are all free to search except for the Books 24x7. I will defently search these sites before purchasing any more textbooks for college. I found that the ALL of the options to be super easy to navigate and I would utilize them all for my next research paper. I sure do wish all the english teachers would require this class before any english class. Very very good information.

As my research needed current dated information, and all the publishing dates were listed on the left numberically. Very different from the Cannell Library search, I found it cool.
I also found a button from the Cannell Libaray catalog page that sent me directly to the Summitt search with my exact search criteria already in place, I also found this funtion to be very useful and cool.

Week 3 Research questions revisited
Research Question #1
Where in the future is Internet Copyright going?
Websites for Internet Copyright overviews, but this would be for the popular opinion of where Internet Copyrights are going but it’s a good start.
Popular Magazines, such as popular science, Internet Science, Wired also for popular opinion, but also other ideas and sources linked towards finding where the future of Internet Copyright is going.
Research Question #2
How can you really control Copyright Infringement on the Internet?
Encyclopedias, to really define the limitations of Internet Copyright Infringement, and to define what are all the legalities that go along with Infringement, along with Legal encyclopedias associated with deep web data base.
A complete book on Internet Copyright Infringement maybe the “Do’s and Don’ts” regarding Infringement.
Research Question #3
Why only let revisions to the Copyright Infringement Act stand for 3 years?
I would pick a all legal encyclopedia, because I would want to know when the 3 years started on certain revisions, also I would want to know when this law went into effect as well as what were the limitations to the law. As in who can request a change and how it gets authorized.

Research Question #3
Why only let revisions to the Copyright Infringement Act stand for 3 years?
I found that using Wikipedia first vs. GVRL was way more effective form of research for me. Focusing the topic seemed easier with Wikipedia, by the time you get to the GVRL one should have their topic narrowed down to a couple power keywords. I also found the IRIS tutorials useful information, but my learing curve is self taught in computers and Internet I did find it helpful. The IRIS tutorials are defently handy when it comes to all the options the college library has to offer. I found this experience rewarding and I learned alot.
